How is it interesting?
The unusual properties of graphene promise to this material a bright future. We will list only some of them, which in our opinion, represent the maximum interest.
Let's start with the mechanical properties. Graphene has very high strength. Graphene sheet area of one square meter (and thickness, we recall, only one atom!) Capable of holding the object weighing 4 kg. Due to the two-dimensional structure, graphene is a very flexible material, which in the future will allow to use it, for example, for weaving threads (the thin graphene "rope" in strength will be similar to a thick and heavy steel ropes). In addition, under certain conditions, graphene is capable of self "to heal" the "holes" in their crystal structure.
Graphene - a material with very high electrical conductivity and heat, which makes it ideal for use in various electronic devices, especially if you remember its full flexibility and optical transparency. There have already been made experimental solar cells, in which the graphite is used as a substitute for relatively expensive indium selenide. The "graphene" solar cells exhibit higher effectiveness.
Another potential application of graphene - the creation of flexible electronics and, in particular, flexible displays. Now screens (as LCD and OLED) as used transparent conductor indium tin oxide, which is relatively expensive and thus fragile. In this sense, high strength and flexibility of graphene make it an ideal candidate for replacement. Widespread graphene certainly give a good impetus to wearable electronics, as it will allow to embed the chips in clothing, paper and other everyday things.
Finally, a graphene film proved to be an excellent filter for the water as it passes the water molecules and thus delays the rest. Perhaps in the future it will help reduce the cost of desalination of sea water. A few months ago, the company Lockheed Martin introduced graphene water filter called Perforene, which, according to the manufacturer, 99% reduction in energy consumption for desalination.
The use of graphene is very extensive, it is difficult to imagine - its application in everyday life and in the industry as well as in space - a ubiquitous material, Graphene!
